Product Introduction of Solanesol
Solanesol is a natural product widely found in higher plants, mammals and microorganisms. It is a waxy white solid with a melting point of 33-42.5°C, insoluble in water and soluble in a variety of organic solvents. It was first isolated from plants by R.L. Rowland et al. in 1956, and in I959 Frickson et al. demonstrated by NMR spectroscopy that Solanesol was composed of nine isoprene units as tri-semi-terphenyl alcohols, and was later found to be present in tobacco leaves at a high content of about 0.3-0.5%. The Solanesol is now generally extracted from waste tobacco leaves as a raw material, first as a crude product (containing 17% lycopene), then as a fine product (70-75%) and then as a pure product (90%), which is then used mainly for the synthesis of Coenzyme Ql0 and Vitamin K2.

Product Function and Application of Solanesol
High purity Solanesol is a key intermediate in the synthesis of best-selling APIs such as CoQ10 and vitamin K2. The two most common processes used to produce CoQ10 are synthetic (where the main raw material is high purity Solanesol) and microbial fermentation. Japan is one of the few countries in the world that first mastered these two CoQ10 production processes and is also the main exporter of CoQ10 in the world. According to statistics, the amount of CoQ10 exported from Japan once accounted for about 90% of the total CoQ10 sales in the international market. However, the main raw material for the synthesis of CoQ10, high purity lycopene, was previously produced in Japan, but as China and India became more capable of producing crude lycopene in large quantities, Japan switched to importing crude lycopene from China and India to synthesise CoQ10 with improved purity and then export it to the European and American markets.
