Sulfathiazole Powder is an organosulphur compound and is a short-acting Sulphonamide antibiotic.

1. Characteristic

It is white or light yellow crystalline granules or powder, odourless and tasteless. It is stable in air and gradually changes colour when exposed to light.

2. Dissolution

Very slightly soluble in water, but easily soluble in sodium hydroxide test solution, also soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid. The colour darkens in contact with light and should be kept airtight in a light-proof container.

3. Uses

Mainly used to treat infections such as Streptococcus haemolyticus, Meningococcus and Pneumococcus. Eliminated due to its high toxic reaction.

4. Preparation or source

May be prepared by condensation of 2-aminothiazole with p-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride followed by reduction.

Product Function of API Powder

Sulfathiazole Powder has the effect of inhibiting bacterial growth and reproduction by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid and is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, which is one of the stronger antibacterial effects of sulfa drugs.

Sulfathiazole ointment can inhibit the dihydrofolate synthase of bacteria, hinder the synthesis of folic acid of bacteria and inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria. It has antibacterial effects on Streptococcus haemolyticus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus, Meningococcus, Escherichia coli and Bacillus dysenteriae.

Cautions of API Powder

1. Contraindicated in patients allergic to sulfonamide and in patients with severe liver and kidney disease.

2. Occasionally haemolytic anaemia, aplastic anaemia, granulocytopenia and allergic purpura, exfoliative dermatitis may occur in severe cases.

3. Adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, skin rash and drug fever.
