Product Description

Product Introduction of API Powder Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid, also known as salicylic acid, is more acidic than benzoic acid, darkens in sunlight, becomes a purplish-red chelate when exposed to iron ions, reacts with ferric chloride in a purple colour, is unstable to heat, and is easily decarboxylated to phenol when heated to 200°C. In nature, salicylic acid is mostly found in the form of methyl ester in birch bark oil, with a content of up to 96%. It is also found in cinnamon bark oil, violet oil and wintergreen oil. Free salicylic acid is only found in small amounts in plants.

Salicylic acid has a dual nature as a phenol and a carboxylic acid. When heated, it sublimates and when heated rapidly, decomposes to form phenol and carbon dioxide. When reacting with sodium hydroxide, both the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups are neutralised to form a double salt; however, when reacting with sodium carbonate, only the carboxyl group is neutralised to form a single salt. When reacting with alcohols or phenols, the corresponding salicylate is formed; when reacting with carboxylic acids or anhydrides, the corresponding carboxylic acid ester is formed. It is toxic, irritates the skin and mucous membranes, and reacts with proteins in the body tissues, so it is corrosive, on the other hand, it can be sterilized. It is stable in storage, but the powder can explode when mixed with air.

It is industrially produced by the reaction between the sodium salt of phenol and carbon dioxide under heating and pressure (Kolbe-Schmitt reaction), first the phenol is neutralized with sodium hydroxide to produce the sodium salt of phenol, then at 4-7 x 105 Pa (4-7 atmospheres) at 125°C to absorb carbon dioxide to produce the benzene sulfonate, after rearrangement to produce the sodium salt of salicylic acid, acidification to produce salicylic acid.

Pharmacological Action of API Powder Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is widely used in eczema, dry skin, acne and dandruff removal. Salicylic acid can be used to exfoliate at concentrations between 3% and 6%, but above 6% it can be destructive to tissue. 40% or less is suitable for the treatment of corns, calluses and viral warts. Salicylic acid can also be added to medication for acne and dandruff. Salicylic acid has been added to many famous cosmetics: in 1993, CLINIQUE was the first to launch a soft and renewing cream containing 1% salicylic acid, which immediately became one of Clinique's most successful products; in 1998, SK-II Crystal Peeling Cream added 1.5% BHA to the original Pitera formula, and used the analogy of peeling eggs to show the effect of salicylic acid on pores and cuticles. The market was also amazed by the 1.5% BHA ingredient in the open-shelf Eurek's popular Revitalising Serum. However, due to the harmful effects of high concentrations of salicylic acid, the concentration of salicylic acid in cosmetics is generally limited to 0.2% to 1.5%, and cosmetics containing salicylic acid must carry a warning to determine the safety of long-term use, and should not be used by children under the age of three.

Application of API Powder Salicylic Acid

2. Used as a pharmaceutical intermediate in the production of painkillers, diuretics, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), sodium salicylate, salicylamide, eugenol, clonidine, phenyl salicylate, ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate, bismuth subsalicylate, and salazosulfapyridine.

3. In the dye industry, it is used to produce dyestuffs such as direct yellow GR, direct sunlight resistant grey BL, direct sunlight resistant brown RT, acid mordant brown G and acid mordant yellow GG.

4. Various esters of salicylic acid can be used as fragrances, for example, methyl salicylate can be used as a fragrance for toothpaste and other flavours and food flavours.

5. It is used in the rubber industry to produce anti-coke agents, UV absorbers and foaming auxiliaries. Salicylic acid is also used as a curing agent for phenolic resins, as a paste preservative for textile printing and dyeing, and as a swelling agent (dyeing promoter) for synthetic fibre dyeing.
