Sulfathiazole powder 99% is an organosulphur compound and is a short-acting Sulphonamide antibiotic.

1. Characteristic

It is white or light yellow crystalline granules or powder, odourless and tasteless. It is stable in air and gradually changes colour when exposed to light.

2. Dissolution

Very slightly soluble in water, but easily soluble in sodium hydroxide test solution, also soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid. The colour darkens in contact with light and should be kept airtight in a light-proof container.

3. Uses

Mainly used to treat infections such as Streptococcus haemolyticus, Meningococcus and Pneumococcus. Eliminated due to its high toxic reaction.

4. Preparation or source

May be prepared by condensation of 2-aminothiazole with p-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride followed by reduction.

Cautions of API Powder
