Huanglian, (scientific name: Coptis chinensis Franch.) It is a perennial herb belonging to the buttercup family and the genus Huanglian, with basal, firm papery, ovate-triangular, three-parted, central lobe ovate-rhombic, pinnatipartite, margin sharply serrate, lateral lobes unequally 2-parted; petiole 5-12 cm long. It has the ability to clear heat and dry dampness, and to relieve fire and detoxification. Its taste is extremely bitter in the mouth, as the saying goes, "A dumb person cannot say that he is bitter", which describes the taste.
