Function

Sialic acid powder has been shown to have numerous biological functions, including regulation of blood protein half-life, antagonism against various toxins, cellular adhesion, glycoprotein lysis protection, antioxidant activity, and promotion of brain development by modulating gangliosides in the brain.

Application

Infant formula: Many well-known global infant formula manufacturers claim to add sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid) to their formula. The Malaysian Ministry of Health approved sialic acid as part of the permitted nutrition label in 2003. Mead Johnson, Carlotani, Friso and Snow Seal have various products labeled with sialic acid content for infant formula sold in the Southeast Asian market. However, the sialic acid content in most infant formula products is currently derived from whey powder rather than pure sialic acid. It can be expected that sialic acid will gradually replace whey powder when the cost of sialic acid production is reduced to a certain level.

Food additives and nutritional supplements: Sialic acid sweets are popular in Japan. Because it is extracted from bird's nest, the candy cannot be priced as a normal lollipop. Sialic acid in candy as a nutritional supplement, sialic acid has another important application: anti-influenza virus. Gum containing sialic acid can be a good idea for fighting the flu season virus.
