Product Description

Product Introduction of Broccoli Seed Extract Sulforaphane

Sulforaphane is one of the most potent substances with anti-cancer activity so far discovered from vegetables, and also has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. It is widely found in cruciferous plants such as broccoli, but its unstable nature and susceptibility to degradation by conditions such as oxygen, heat and alkali have limited its application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Microencapsulation is a tool to protect the target ingredient by trapping the active ingredient in a micro- and nano-scale matrix and improving its stability. Macromolecular polymers such as proteins or polysaccharides that are highly biocompatible and biodegradable are often used as encapsulation matrices.

Sulforaphane is widely present in broccoli seeds in the form of the stable precursor Glucoraphanin and effectively inhibits a group of Gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as Gram-positive bacteria such as Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus or Stachybotrys spp. isolated from the human gastrointestinal tract.

Furthermore, Sulforaphane has shown anti-Helicobacter pylori (HP) activity in vivo and in vitro.

Function of Broccoli Seed Extract Sulforaphane

Sulforaphane is one of the most potent activators of Nrf2 found to date, and can turn on a variety of cytoprotective effects such as detoxification, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by activating Nrf2. Sulforaphane enhances the signalling of the nuclear transcription factor Nrf2, activating it 13.5 times more efficiently than curcumin, 18 times more efficiently than silymarin and 105 times more efficiently than resveratrol.

The nuclear transcription factor Nrf2 is an important regulator of cytoprotective mechanisms in the human body, including detoxification, antioxidation and anti-inflammation. Nrf2 activates the transcription of more than 500 genes in the human genome, most of which have cytoprotective functions, promoting the expression of various detoxification enzymes, reducing the proportion of carcinogens activated, and enhancing the body's detoxification and metabolic excretion of harmful foreign substances and toxic/carcinogenic substances. . In addition, Nrf2 enhances the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions of the body and promotes cellular clearance of aggregates of toxic proteins and abnormal functioning organelles.

HP and Broccoli Seed Extract Sulforaphane

In recent years, clinical strains of HP have shown an increasing trend of resistance to antibiotic drugs such as clarithromycin, metronidazole and levofloxacin (fluoroquinolones), which are commonly used to eradicate HP.

These resistant strains persist in the gastrointestinal tract in increasingly resistant forms or as intracellular pathogens, making eradication difficult and treatment failure impossible. For resistant patients, a combination of nutritionally targeted + drug interventions may be a good strategy.

According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Sulforaphane contained in broccoli inhibited more than 40 clinically isolated strains of clarithromycin and metronidazole-resistant HP with a minimum inhibitory concentration (90 %) of <4 μg/mL.

This strategy was validated in a series of clinical trials conducted by scientists, including one in which 86 patients with HP-infected type 2 diabetes were given a standard triple therapy (omeprazole 20 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg, amoxicillin 1000 mg twice/day for 14 days), a broccoli sprout extract rich in Sulforaphane (6 g/day, equivalent to approximately 24 mg of carotenoids for 28 days), and a group intervention.

The results showed that the eradication rate in the combination group of Sulforaphane and triple therapy (91.7%) was significantly higher than that in the triple therapy group alone (89.3%) and the broccoli sprout group (56.0%), indicating that Sulforaphane enhanced the clearance of HP by standard triple therapy.
